Experiment on Armadillidiidae Preference for Habitat: Dark and Dry vs. Light and Moist, Summaries of Genetics

In this experiment, students hypothesized that armadillidiidae (pill bugs) prefer dark and dry environments over light and moist conditions. The results supported this hypothesis as the armadillidiidae were found to be more prevalent in the dark and dry chambers. The students also discussed the evolutionary significance of this preference and limitations of the experiment.

Discussion:
In this experiment, we hypothesized that the Armadillidiidae would prefer the dark and
dry areas over the light and moist environment. The hypothesis my group came up with was
supported because in our results, it was proven that the Armadillidiidae preferred the habitat that
was dark and dry. There was less Armadillidiidae in the moist and light side of the chambers.
During the experiment we found out that the Pill Bugs were more likely to stay on the dark and
moist areas. Rather than, being in areas that are dry and light. The results I received did match
because in the articles that we read show the facts that Pill bugs like the moisture (Hornung
2010). This can be related to evolutionary history because over the course of time, animals must
adapt and stay in the environments with a lot od moisture. Our results did agree with the peer
reviewed literature and the experiments we saw online. The articles we have read also stated that
the Armadillidiidae prefer to be in environments that are dark with moisture. Yes, the main
limitation that we saw in out experiment was that it was hard to pick up the isopods with the
tweezers that was provided. Some of the isopods had slightly more time to choose their
environments. In total each isopod had at least 5 minutes to choose their habitat. I do believe that
for the next experiment we should keep the same methods that we did for the isopods. Instead,
make the habitats larger. Instead of the small chambers we could use tanks and create a dry/light
side and then a wet/dark side. We could keep the isopods those tanks overnight. Then, the
following night see how well they adapted in the environment they chose.
Results:
In my group we recorded the data of our experiment. When we recorded the data of environment
one had, it had eight isopods in the dry environment and zero in the moist environment. In the
second trial eight isopods in the dry environment and zero in the moist environment. For the
third trial there was a slight change. We had five isopods in the dry area and three in the moist
environment. (1, N=24)+7.04, P+0.008. We compared that the p-value was less than 0.05. This
showed there was a significance difference.
