Describe this character at the beginning of the film. Who are they? How old are they and what is their role in the story? What is their personality?

What do they want/need? What problem are they facing?

Jonas (Brenton Thwaites)

He is the protagonist (main character).

He can see things differently than other people.

He is about to ‘graduate’ (so maybe 16- years old)

He is worried that he won’t be assigned a job that suits him: he doesn’t know what he wants to do.

He has: courage, intelligence, integrity and has the ability to see beyond.

He becomes the Receiver of Memory.

He learns about love, emotions etc. and what his community has lost.

He wants to end the Community’s restrictions and wants to bring back what they have lost.

He grabs Gabriel (to save his life) and runs.

He crosses the Boundary of Memories – doing so restores the memories to the rest of the community (therefore saving Fiona’s life, last minute).

The Giver (Jeff Bridges)

He gives memories to Jonas.

Rosemary was his daughter (so he broke some rule there).

He wants to end the Community’s rules.

He secretly trains Jonas to do so.

The Giver succeeds in what he wants when Jonas crosses the boundary of memory.

Chief Elder (Meryl Streep)

The antagonist (the main enemy of the protagonist).

She was once in love with the Giver. She is kind of like Fiona is for Jonas.

(As far as we know she is …’s mother? maybe? She knew that Rosemary was his daughter).

She wants to preserve the community and make sure the rules are followed.

She doesn’t want the bad memories to ruin her community.

She fails.

The memories ruin her perfect community.

Fiona (Odeya Rush)

Fiona is Jonas’s romantic interest. She is a good friend. Jonas has been in love with her since they were younger (although he wasn’t aware of it).

She loves children; she is very nurturing. She has a knack with kids. She becomes a ‘nurturer’.

She loves Jonas, though she doesn’t know it; she wants to be with him and protect him.

Is almost killed after helping Jonas escape. Luckily, the memories change Jonas f mind and

Asher (Cameron Monaghan)

Jonas’s best friend.

Becomes a drone pilot.

Took his authority position very seriously.

In the film it’s only referred to slightly but Asher was a troublemaker when he was a kid: when he becomes a pilot, he becomes very disciplined and a

Wants to follow the rules.

Is disturbed when Jonas breaks rules.

Might have feelings for Fiona too, and might be a bit envious of Jonas because of it.

Lilly (Emma Tremblay )

She is a happy little kid.

Jonas teaches her how to dance.

She is a Nine: she gets a new bike.

Baby Gabriel (Alexander & James Gillings)

Sickly baby who can also receive memories

Comes to stay with Jonas’s families.
