AGENDA

Global City 2

Each member will be assigned a global city to discuss and research. The reports must answer the following questions:

  1. How would you describe your city?
  2. What is your city known for?
  3. What makes your city a global city? The Challenges of Global City -sites of great inequality and poverty (economic globalization has paved the way for massive inequality) -gentrification (driving out the poor in favor of newer, wealthier residents) -lack of public transportation (Bangkok, Manila) -governments inability to regulate their car industries (have made them extremely polluted) -urban areas consume most of the world’s energy (environmental degradation) -tremendous violence or higher crime rates -major cities can be sites of terror attacks (especially those with global influence economically and politically; these cities are targets of terrorism because of their high population and their role which targets a symbol of globalization that many terrorists despise. examples: 911 attacks brought down the twin towers in New York) -in most of the world’s global cities, the middle class is also thinning out -globalization creates high-income jobs that are concentrated in global cities

more info: “These global cities are sites and mediums of globalization and they are there for material representation of the phenomenon. Through these global cities, we see the best of globalization. They are places that create exciting fusions of culture and ideas but they are also places that remain the sites for great inequality (where global servants serve global entrepreneurs).” The question of how globalization can be made more just is partly a question of how people make their cities more just or more equal.
