Definition of Global City -coined by Saskia Sassen Global City as Spatial Globalization Indicators for Globality: -Economic Power (determines which cities are global; stock market) -Economic Opportunities (make it attractive to talents across the world) -Economic Competitiveness (market size, purchasing power of citizens, size of the middle class, and potential for growth) -Center of Authority (State power; Washington D.C.: White House) -Political influence (powerful political hubs exert influence on their own countries as well as on international affairs. examples: Jakarta, Indonesia, the main headquarters of ASEAN; UN in New York, E.U. in Brussels) -Center of higher learning and culture (a city’s intellectual influence; New York Times in New York, Harvard University, etc) Examples of Global Cities
Global City 2
Each member will be assigned a global city to discuss and research. The reports must answer the following questions:

They are places that create exciting fusions of culture and ideas but they are also places that remain the sites for great inequality (where global servants serve global entrepreneurs).” The question of how globalization can be made more just is partly a question of how people make their cities more just or more equal.
