The pros and cons of electronic cigarette use, with a focus on identifying the harmful effects of e-cigarettes. It examines the concept of harm reduction and whether e-cigarettes can be considered a harm reduction approach to smoking or if they have created a new problem on their own. The document cites statistics and research from the textbook to support the argument that e-cigarettes are not a true harm reduction method and are instead creating a new public health issue, particularly among youth. The comprehensive analysis covers the addictive nature of nicotine, the presence of harmful chemicals in e-cigarette vapors, and the potential long-term health consequences of e-cigarette use. Overall, the document provides a well-researched and compelling case against the use of electronic cigarettes.

Consider the pros/cons to electronic cigarette use Identify the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes
Use chapter 7 in your textbook to complete this assignment.
Electronic cigarettes were first introduced as a tobacco cessation system and were considered a harm reduction approach. Currently, many people who use electronic cigarettes were not cigarette smokers. Do you feel electronic cigarettes are still a harm reduction approach or have they create their own market for tobacco use? In your answer: Define harm reduction Take a side (are electronic cigarettes a harm reduction approach to smoking or are they a new problem on their own) Justify your answer with facts from your textbook and cite these within your answer Answers should be at least 500 words. Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. It’s about helping people get better and improve their mental and physical state. I believe that e-cigs are a problem on their own. It’s not a harm reduction to smoking actual cigarettes. If someone was going to switch from tobacco to e-cigs, they need to just stop smoking all together! They are both harmful to the body. I think very few people who use e-cigs were smokers prior to using it. My generation is the main group of people who use e-cigs. According to chapter 7, “…30-day prevalence rates in 2015 were 9.5% for 8th graders, 14% for 10th graders, and 16.2% for 12th graders. These rates are much higher compared to traditional cigarette use” (7-7d). Most people think that e-cigs are harmless, which
obviously makes them think it’s safe to ingest. E-cigs “Vapors contain nicotine, heavy metals, ultrafine particulates, and cancer-causing agents” (7-7d). Nicotine is highly addictive and reaches the brain in seconds. If anything has nicotine in it, it’s just not safe to ingest and you will become hooked and addicted to it! Additionally, many chemicals have been found in e-cigs than are in traditional cigarettes as well. I’m sure when e-cigs were first introduced it was seen as safe and could help smokers quit actual cigarettes. But it’s harming the youth. Kids look at what their peers think is cool and do the same. Using e-cigs is seen as cool by teenagers, and it’s affecting them badly. Some elementary kids have been caught using them in the bathroom! This is why I strongly believe that e-cigs are a new problem, and it may even get worse than smoking cigarettes. Furthermore, they haven’t been around that long, so we don’t even know the long-term effect it will have on one’s body! If all these chemicals are in it that are known to cause cancer, what do we think will happen to all these people? Thirdhand smoke is also an issue. E-cigs don’t affect just the user, which is exactly how cigarettes work as well. They target the youth to get them to use their products. They don’t care about older people switching over. They want young kids who don’t realize the harm they are causing to their bodies!
