Twizzler Measurements
Standards:
6.4.1c Understand, select, and use units of appropriate size and type to measure angles,
perimeter, area, surface area, volume
6.4.2a Use a variety of strategies to estimate length, perimeter, circumference, area, and
volume.
6.4.2b Use a variety of manipulatives to develop formulas to determine the circumference
of circles
6.4.2c Use formulas to determine the area of triangles and parallelograms
6.4.2d Use a variety of manipulatives to develop formulas to determine the area of
trapezoids and circles
Materials:
Twizzler Pull & Peel
Shapes for students to measure (optional)
Ruler
Pencil
Paper
Directions:
1. Pass out the shapes, candy, and rulers. The Twizzlers can be used to create the
shapes. They can also be used to find the area, perimeter, circumference,
diameter, etc. of a shape.
2. Discuss formulas to use in order to find perimeter, area, etc. (you can write these
formulas on the overhead, etc)
3. Demonstrate an example by using the Elmo.
4. Have the students peel their Twizzlers and measure the length of the strands. This
can be used in lieu of a ruler to measure the shapes.
5. If you did not give the students shapes, have them make a shape using their
Twizzlers.
6. Have the students find the area, perimeter, etc. of their shape by using their candy.
7. Have the students draw their shape and write their answers on a piece of paper.
8. Once the students are finished, have them exchange shapes until they have
complete all the different shapes and formulas.

  1. Have a discussion at the end of class so the students can check their work. Use the Elmo and allow students to demonstrate how to find the perimeter, area, etc. for their classmates.
  2. As a treat, allow the students to eat their candy!
