Types of Muscle Contractions: Isometric, Concentric, and Eccentric, Lecture notes of Animal Anatomy and Physiology

An overview of different types of muscle contractions, including isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions. Isometric contractions occur when a muscle cannot change its length while generating tone, concentric contractions involve muscle shortening and force generation, and eccentric contractions result in muscle elongation while still generating force. The document also touches upon the stimulus frequency-force relationship and load-velocity relationship in muscle contractions.

Types of Contractions

  • Isometric Contraction
  • The opposite situation occurs when the muscle is fixed at both ends by its tendons. Then, when contraction occurs, the muscle cannot change its length but the tone will increase. This is called isometric (iso = same; metric = length)..
