  • Research the processes used (at least three), including relevant health and safety factors and legislation/regulations; and
  • Research how these engineering processes can be affected by human factors (individual and team). You then need to: Produce a report that evaluates the effectiveness of the engineering processes (at least three) used to manufacture the flange and how human factors affect the performance of the engineering processes. Your report should include:
    • Information on the advantages and limitations of the engineering processes used (at least three) compared with the advantages and limitations of using other possible processes, orough details about how the engineering processes work/operate, including health and safety factors and legislation and regulations that apply; and
    • Evidence that you have a strong awareness of a range of human factors, and can judge how they impact on the performance of the engineering processes from both an individual and team perspective. 3 Engineering Processes

1. Injection Mounding

• Injection Moulding is one of the processes, Injection moulding is used to

create toys electrical appliances and many more objects. There are

multiple materials which can be used for injection moulding such as

polymers, Glass and Thermoplastics and many more.

• Injection moulding works by first selecting the desired mould which is

made from stainless steel than the bits of material most commonly

Thermoplastics are fed into the machine where it is heated when it

reaches the desired temperature the machine threads rotate pushing the

material inside where it gets pushed into the mould where is compressed

and by this it picks up the shape of the mould. Then it is left to be cured for a few seconds and then it’s removed

from the mould a left to cool back down to room temperature by doing this you make sure the plastic is rigid.

• The advantage of using injection moulding is that it can be used for large volume of production. The parts are

highly accurate which makes the process faster because the accuracy

can be achieved by the machine that creates the components.

• One of the disadvantages of injection moulding is that the machinery

cost a lot and not many companies can afford it which makes the

market more competitive which decreases the profit because each

company is trying to create the cheapest products.

2. Forging

Press Forging:

• There are multiple types of forging but the most common one which is used in

engineering is press forging. First, a huge chunk of metal is heated up then it is moved

and placed onto the press forging machine. Then slowly the press forging machine starts

shaping the heated-up metal by applying force up to 10,000 tons of force. The huge

piece of metal can be moved using a chain which is uses hydraulics to move up and

down and left and right to change the position.

• The advantages of Press forging are that it increases all mechanical properties of

the workpiece such as strength and ductility. Another advantage is that the

machinist/operator has good control over what is happening because it is

automatically controlled which increases accuracy of the component.

• One of the Limitations of Press Forging is that

Press forging is more expensive compared to drop forging because of the cost

of the crank press.

3. Casting – Die or Sand

• The sand-casting Process consist of molten metal poured typically from a ladle

into a mould made from sand. Unlike with die casting, no high pressure is

required. The sand mould is created when a match plate or a pattern is made

from wood is placed into an object then sand is distributed around the match

plate and inside the enclosure. Once the sand is packed in the match plate is then

removed and the cavity is inserted with molten metal, then the metal solidifies,

and the mould is opened, and the sand is removed from the casting.

• The Die casting process consists of molten metal forced into a die under huge

pressure, once the metal is poured into the shape it solidifies and then is removed

from the mould. As the metal is cooled down the gating material which is used as a

protection is removed and the final product is finished. Die casting is fast and that

is why is so commonly used in industry and it is very cheap to use to manufacture

components.
