Unit 2 Seminar 551 In this seminar, we started by going over some concepts related to cell adaptation, such as the different types of hypertrophy, factors that deprive cells of oxygen, triggers and effects of acute inflammation. The professor used personal examples, like his recent experience with anaphylaxis, to illustrate the inflammatory response. He also covered components of the innate immune system like epithelial cells, mucous membranes, macrophages, and the complement system. Visual aids helped explain things like the mucosal lining in the vagina and gut permeability. Towards the end, we discussed a case study involving a 15-year-old boy presenting with shoulder pain. The professor emphasized considering different potential diagnoses based on the patient's age, pain location, and symptoms. The seminar this week provided valuable education on cell adaptation physiology, the immune response, reviewing case studies, and strategies for succeeding in the course through active participation and effective study habits. I went into the topics and elaborated on the educational points within the seminar which I put below. I really enjoy this class so far, I think that learning these concepts deeper not only helps me now with my current position but will also help me significantly in my future roles. Types of hypertrophy: Physiologic hypertrophy - Normal increase in cell size due to growth/exercise (e.g. muscle bulking up) Pathologic hypertrophy - Abnormal increase from a disease process (e.g. enlarged heart from high blood pressure) Factors depriving cells of oxygen:
Lactic acid buildup can interrupt oxidative metabolism and ATP generation Lack of blood flow/ischemia prevents oxygen delivery to cells Triggers of acute inflammation: Physical trauma, heat, chemicals, infections (viral, bacterial, fungal) The body's immune response to a perceived threat Effects of acute inflammation: Increased blood flow, capillary dilation, neutrophil recruitment to the area Redness, swelling, heat, pain are classic signs Example: Anaphylactic reaction to a steroid shot was an acute inflammatory response Innate Immune System: Epithelial cells form physical barrier Mucous membranes trap pathogens Macrophages engulf and destroy invaders Complement system marks pathogens for destruction White Blood Cells: Neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils are granulocytes (have granules) Granules contain enzymes to break down pathogens Phagocytosis to engulf and digest microbes
