Unit 4 Seminar 551 This seminar on RSV, bronchitis, and respiratory review was helpful, in my opinion. The first admin things that was covered were the impending midterm exam and the availability of the Unit 3 seminar tape. He made it clear that all material up to Unit 5 would be covered in the cumulative midterm. After that, it went onto the main subject, beginning with a case study about Brad, a coal miner. I thought the information about pneumoconiosis, an interstitial lung disease, was interesting in the first case study on the coal miner that came up in the seminar. We went over the several ways that coal dust damages the lungs, such as direct toxicity and oxygen species activation. The processes affecting diffusion capacities across alveolar membranes in lung disorders were better understood thanks to this case study too. I learned about several things that can affect lung function, including airway obstruction, alveolar injury, membrane thickness, and loss of lung compliance. Several important respiratory physiology concepts were covered and including: Pulmonary circulation Ventilation Gas exchange Oxygen utilization Lung elasticity Surface tension The description of pulmonary circulation was very helpful to me since it gave me a clear picture of how blood travels through the lungs and helps the alveolar sacs exchange gases. Its
like listening to a good review of material I learned many years ago. The part that vitamin D levels play in preventing acute respiratory tract infections was also covered in the seminar. The possibility that regular vitamin D administration may be more beneficial than bolus doses got my attention, especially for individuals who are already low. The seminar discussed COVID-19 near the end of the time, going into its pathophysiology and effects on the respiratory system. The last part struck me as especially pertinent considering what happened during the pandemic. It was important to listen to the detailed account of how the virus enters and multiplies inside host cells. I thought this week’s seminar had a good overview of respiratory physiology and pathophysiology overall. It made hard ideas easier to understand and by using case studies and practical examples. I enjoy how a wide range of subjects came up, from fundamental lung function to illnesses like COVID-19 and pneumoconiosis. Thank you again for allowing us to go back into the seminar. Sometimes my work schedule can be very hectic and it’s nice to be able to do these things when I do have some extra time. I think my favorite subject overall with A&P is cardiac disorders and pulmonary disorders (especially the topic of ventilation/perfusion mismatch, Answer: C Pulmonary hypertension) but it’s nice to get a refresher on these things. Now, I just hope my exam scores show that these are my favorite. Questions during seminar: What mechanisms in lung disease can affect diffusing capacities across alveolar membranes? Answer: Some mechanisms include alveolar damage or collapse, alveolar membrane thickening, loss of lung compliance, airway obstruction, and ciliary death. These factors can impair gas exchange and reduce diffusing capacity.
