MASTERS IN ARCHITECTURE 1st^ year

Session 2021 – 2023, Sem 1

ROAD DESIGN

• Structural Design of Roads:

Construction details

• Geometric Design of Roads: Horizontal

& Vertical Alignment, Slope, sight

distance etc

• Physical Design/ Layout of Roads/

Streets: No of Lanes, Classification

Lanes, Street Furniture, ROW for

Utilities etc

HIGHWAY

URBAN STREET

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE S?

HIGHWAY

URBAN STREET

FREEWAY/ HIGHWAY URBAN STREET

ROAD WIDTH Road width very high. No of Lanes also high Smaller Road Width depending on road hierarchy. TRAFFIC COMPOSITION & USAGE Mostly Heavy vehicles: trucks, buses, cars Mostly Car Lanes. No Lanes for Cycles, NMT or Pedestrians Mixed composition: cars, buses (public transport), cycles, non motorized transport, Pedestrians, heavy vehicles (occasional) Different Lanes Required: Footpaths, Cycles tracks, Bus Lanes, Car Lanes, Parking Lanes etc STREET FURNITURE Minimal Street furniture Bus stops, Street Lights, Signage/ Warrants, Parking Infrastructure, Dustbins, Pedestrian Crossings etc SURROUNDIN G DEVELOPMEN T Mostly sparse/ no development. Densely developed. Residential, commercial land use etc SPEED Very high speed traffic movement Low to medium speed traffic movement LANDSCAPE Minimal landscaping Soft Landscape & Street trees are an important component of design UTILITIES ROW Does not really need to accommodate urban utilities except for gas pipelines, high transmission lines etc Need sufficient ROW and careful planning for drainage, sewerage, water pipelines and other cables TRAFFIC FLOW Uninterrupted (Minimal or No Intersections) Interrupted Traffic Flow (Intersections – Signalized/ Non Signalized)

Road Cross Sections

Divided vs Undivided

Roads

• Divided Road: Where there is a median

separating the two directional traffic

flow

• Undivided Road: The tow directional

traffic flow is usually separated by road

marking
