Children will use emergent writing while making lists.
Materials
Grocery Lists (Activity Master)
Food Vocabulary Cards (Activity Master)
Print Resources (Grocery Store Fliers)
Writing Utensils
Extension: Blank Lists (Activity Master)
Activity
After teacher introduction, children use emergent writing to make grocery lists.
1. Set out grocery store flyers and/or Food Vocabulary Cards (Activity Master), List Paper, pencils, crayons, or markers.
2. Children will use the flyers/Food Vocabulary Cards to select items they want to “buy” from the store.
3. Children copy words from the flyer and use other emergent writing skills to add items their list.
4. Share with each other in the group.
5. Teacher evaluation.
AdaptationsandExtensions
Sort the list by the initial letter. Teacher makes letter headings (e.g., Aa for apples, Bb for bread, etc.) on the
grocery list paper. Children add their words under the correct letter.
Write a Guest List for a “Birthday party” or other type of party. Set out class name cards with photographs
for children to write each name on the list.
Write other types of lists.
