Unit 5
Adjective: it is a word that gives a quality to people, places or objects: a clever girls; an
expensive car; very beautiful countries.
Comparative: it is used to compare two or more people, objects or places. There are
three kinds of comparatives:
1. Comparative of equality: it is formed with the adjective inserted between the
construction “as as” for affirmative and interrogative: She is as clever as her
mother; Is she as clever as her mother? or “not as…as” for negative phrases: I am
not as young as you are; He works as much as he should.
2. Inferiority comparatives: it is formed with the adjective inserted between the
construction “less …than: She is less young than you.
3. Superiority comparatives: there are two ways for forming:
- The syllable “er” is added at the end of the neutral adjective when it has 5 letters
and the word “than”: Your house is bigger than mine.
- Adding the word “more” before the neutral adjective and the word “than”: This car
is more expensive than that.
Superlative: it is used to say that a person, object or place is the most or the least. There
are two ways for forming:
- When de neutral adjective has 5 letters the syllable “est” is added at the end: Susan is the
richest woman I know.
- When the neutral adjective has more than 5 letters: This is the best film a saw up to now;
or This book is the least interesting I read.

Prefixes and suffixes: they are letter or groups of letters that are added at the beginning
of a word (prefix) or at the end of a word (suffix) to change the meaning and /or function of
the word.
