Learning How to Suture
It’s a normal day of high school. I’m on the last period of the day, ready to get out of
school and go home. At this time I’m taking a class called biomedical innovations, a course
which purpose is for students to gain knowledge on the medical field. As I just got back from
lunch time, I’m not ready for a lecture. To my surprise that day was a different day, as my
teacher said we were going to learn how to suture. The reason of this was because as a previous
project we had to dissect a pig, and now we were going to learn how to suture the body back
together. When I heard about this activity I was feeling intimidated because I know I’m not the
best at working into detailed related stuff.
We began to prepare for this activity. My teacher pulled up a video tutorial on the basics
of how to make a suture. After taking some notes the video finished, and I was feeling nervous
because I still didn’t had a clear idea of how should I perform a successful suture. From a large
classroom full of students we got spread into our lab groups to start practicing. To practice we
were able to suture a foam sponge and a banana. Each group was given a suture kit accompanied
with a paper which had instructions of how to make different styles of sutures, some more
complicated than others. Since we were given one kit per group each person had an individual
turn. Although I thought it was going to be harder to have a precise suture, I was able to manage
my body without pressure and it turned out really well. Overall the practice was a success, my

classmates were there to help me, and everything went fine. By then I didn’t feel like it was a challenge. After the practice finished, we began the assignment. Each person from the lab group was responsible for a part of the pig to suture back together. Here is where things got complicated, even thought I felt like I nailed the practice I started feeling pressured because we were going to be graded on this assignment, the teacher was going to evaluate the difficulty of the suture and the neatness of the final outcome. I was responsible to suture back the fore flank (the chest area) and the belly of the baby pig , which was one of the biggest open cuts, as a group we decided I was going to do it but since it seemed to be a complicated part my partners said they were going to help me on it if I needed. Before starting the activity I wasn’t squeamish about having contact with the pig, however as I was watching my lab partners perform I noticed that the smell of the pig was awful. I could describe it as a combination of chemicals and a dead animal. The odor of it was so strong that it would make my eyes burn even though I was wearing goggles. This wasn’t an obstacle though, I’ve already worked with the pig in a past project so I got used to the smell of it. Even though the pig stunk really bad I was still more focused on how my classmates were performing so I could learn and improve from what they were doing. I was the third person to go. Maybe it was the moment and the situation but I started to feel pressured, I felt the eyes of everyone on my group on me, watching what I was doing and I started feeling a little nervous, even though it wasn’t a big deal. At that moment I was still in the process of learning because I just did it once before. I took the needle with the needle holder and as soon as I placed it on the skin of the pig , it wasn’t the same surface as a soft piece of foam, or the smooth peel of a banana, it was definitely rough, and really hard to manipulate. I had to take

Some ways this knowledge has stayed with me that I can relate on a daily basis is at the moment of drawing for a group project or just in general an activity where I need to use my hand to work under pressure. Suture or stitching is not something I usually do, but I need to use my hand in every activity I do. Probably I will never need to do a suture again, but the experience I gained from this activity made me realize that if I want to become a dentist on the future, I will need to deal with human bodies, Especially through use of my hands. I could incorporate my new skills in activities such as cleaning people’s teeth by being able to manage my hands in a way that they won’t be shaky. In dentistry I might not deal with the inside of a body, but I will need to be really careful dealing with the mouth of a person, just as I was stitching together the body of the pig. For now I’m not planning on to performing this learning but if one day one of my jeans rip, or a shirt unfortunately gets a hole on it, now I know how I can stitch it back together making it look nice.
